Ehlers said she sold her house and car to launch the project, and she planned to distribute 30,000 free devices under supervision during the World Cup period.
Dr. Sonnet Ehlers was inspired to create the Rape-aXe after treating rape victims while she with the South African Blood Transfusion Service.
South Africa has the highest rate of rape per capita in the world.
It is estimated that a woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read. One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.
More than 25% of South African men questioned in a survey admitted to raping someone; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person, according to a new study conducted by the Medical Research Council (MRC).
Others say that such a device will only anger the rapist and could lead to even more violence towards the victim.

Great idea, except for one thing. How extra mad will those guys get, and what concequence will that lead to for the woman? What if the rape is the attacker's 'soft choice', second to MURDER - and that that special condom will push them over the edge?
Also... once rapists starts to experience that 'problem', they will continue raping women, only that they firstly will stick all kinds of 'test gadgets' up there, before they do it - which means probably more pain for all women who gets raped.
So in what way is it really a smart thing overall? Who came up with that? Did they not really think it through?
What is needed is more of a pro-active role on the part of society, preventing men from ever falling so much emotionally that they will at all consider doing harm on ANYONE.
It is Dr/ Ehlers Sonnet, as it says in the article. About the rage of the raper it also gives you an answer, that this time you get when the raper is hurt is to get away, but of course as you say there is always a risk.
